MADRID, MAY 2 1808-2008. ONE PEOPLE, ONE NATION:

Publication that recalls the bicentenary of the commemoration of the battle that led to the uprising of the people of Madrid against the Napoleonic troops. This was the first defeat of a French army in the open field, since the beginning of the Napoleonic campaigns, and a milestone of singular importance in the Independence War process, demonstrating that it was possible to defeat the powerful of the invading army.

The edition of the book, prefaced by the president of the Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, and by the historian and director of the Foundation Dos de Mayo, Fernando García de Cortázar, was sponsored by the Caja Madrid Foundation. The work includes three different and complementary perspectives on the 2 May, 1808: “The Century of Enlightenment” by Alejo Carpentier; “The 19 March and the 2 May”, one of the Benito Pérez Galdós National Episodes, and the “Twelfth Letter” by José María Blanco White.

The publication of this work was the first of the many activities that the Foundation “Dos de Mayo, Nación y Libertad” (2 May, Nation and Freedom) organised for the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the uprising of the people of Madrid against the Napoleonic troops, which marks a turning point in the configuration of Spain as a nation of free citizens.
